What is a Box Spring?
A box spring is a firm base used as a buffer between your mattress and your bed frame. It’s typically made out of wood and is used to make your bed taller and easier to access, reducing the shock and bounce of your mattress. Box springs also create a firmer sleeping area for you and can increase the lifespan of your mattress. Typical beds are made up of a combination of a mattress, box spring and a frame.
Do You Need a Box Spring?
So the question is, do you really need a box spring? We get this question a lot and there are a couple of ways to answer this so we’ll try to cover all of our bases here.
When it comes to comfort, most new mattresses do not need a box spring. Mattress technology has taken us a long way and companies are now developing mattresses that are comfy enough without the use of a box spring. Modern day mattresses now contain all the necessary components for a great night’s sleep. However, each mattress will need a hard-flat surface to place the mattress on. This could include a hardwood floor, platform bed or even, you guessed it, a box spring.
For the most part, mattress warranties require the use of box spring as a universal standard to ensuring your mattress is properly supported. If you’re setting your mattress on a soft, uneven, unsupportive surface, it could decrease its lifespan. That’s why it’s important to ensure you mattress is set onto a hard, flat surface to ensure it’s lifespan and quality is maintained.
Two Sided Mattresses
While modern day mattress designs rarely use two sides, it can still be found. If this is the case, two sided mattresses are designed for the use of a box spring. Without one, you’ll most likely see the quality of your mattress suffer in a much shorter period of time than without one.
